• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Captain Couth -- We'll strike the match if you can spill the gas!! : We Are the Clash is a through and fascinating look at a band in turmoil amidst the chaos of the eighties. A book that was several years in the making and well worth it. I have always found this era of The Clash so fascinating and one of the few people who actually enjoyed their last studio album "Cut the Crap" warts and all. But the untold story behind the years of 1983-1985 have now been told in full detail about the conflicts Joe Strummer had to deal with (death of parents, puppeteer/manager/sixth member Bernie Rhodes), the dismissal of chief songwriter Mick Jones and strung out drummer Topper Headon whom became a totally liability. Authors Mark Andersen and Ralph Helbutzki document not only the troubled times within the band but the era of Reagan and Thatcher which played a key role in Strummer & Co, continuing to trudge along with being the sole voice of reason in the mainstream music industry. We drove across half the State of Michigan with friends, singing "London Calling" all the way--and it didn't much matter to me that Mick Jones wasn't in the group that took the state in East Lansing that night. The fact that "The Baker" had done the Foreword suggested to me that this was going to be a good read. To be honest..I'm not disappointed. Clash MkII is always a difficult one I think. The subject probably splits the fans (and the band and entourage too!). Having seen The Clash MKI, I guess like many, you got the impression that it was really over, and MK II was what became known as The Cabaret Clash. Reading this book...I have to admit that this probably wasn't really true. I've read all the other books on the band/s and few spend too much time on Clash MK II. I did kind of desert them, certainly after getting Cut The Crap...but THis is England still does stand out as a true epic song. The authors seem to give MK II the same degree of passion and praise as others (Me included) would give The Clash Version whatever...... What is interesting about this book is that it is two authors chipping in, and also the way they have managed to interweave the politics both in the UK and USA at the time. It slips from The Clash to Greenham Common...or Ronnie Reagan and his shady arms deals without really veering off to wildly. So the Clash parts fill in more gaps in the story, a lot of material from Vince, Nick and Pete about what was going on. Joe as clearly under pressure, depressed and I sense goiing pn a pretty emotional roller coaster ride. Some good stuff about Bernie too. So for me..yes there is new stuff in here, and mix this with the Vince White book ..you get a fuller picture of what was going on. I consider myself a pretty hardcore fan of the band, but this book almost makes me feel guilty for not supporting them in the MK II formation, the "new recruits" it seems were passionate about what they were doing..they certainly weren't in it for the money!!!
