The Burning Plain: A Henry Rios Novel (The Henry Rios Mysteries Book 6) Customer Reviews

:
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Ulysses Dietz -- The penultimate installment of this remarkable, important series. : Whew. “The Burning Plain” is Henry Rios’ journey into hell. It is taut, gripping, written with the same crisp prose and no-nonsense dialogue that characterizes the other books in this fantastic—important—series. It is brilliant. And it’s almost unrelentingly bleak. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Petronius -- Well written on many levels : Michael Nava's "The Burning Plain" captures your interest on several levels. Foremost is the page turner well-written mystery. I did not want to put the book down. All of his characters are so well fleshed out that you feel that you know them. Nava's occasional literary references are erudite. The protagonist is totally believable, flawed, and likeable. The Los Angeles descriptions make you think that you are there, and that it is a real place, not some far off make-believe city. He hits on several themes of gay life without preaching or rubbing it in your face: AIDS, loss of a partner, challenges of recovery from alcoholism, touchy relations with a partner's parents, always feeling as the outsider in life and in his profession from being gay, a kid struggling to come out. However, he does this with just a phrase or a sentence occasionally- never lengthy preaching. What a skill with words. As a lawyer myself, I often don't like the fictionalized lawyer stories on TV or in some books, because they get the law all wrong, or have too many unbelievable characters and situations in the story. Not Nava. He writes with authority, and keeps it all gripingly real. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2012 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Oakman -- Probably my favorite Henry Rios novel : Probably my favorite Henry Rios novel. And it's almost twice as long as some of the others. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mark R. -- Wonderful book, great value : Excellent author, love his books and was able to purchase them all at a great price. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Samuel Augustus Jennings -- Mi Amigo Henry Rios : I thoroughly relate to Henry Rios, the super intelligent Mexican-American attorney who drives Nava's stories because he makes me proud to be a gay black man. I have read all his books dozens of times but they always feel brand new. I am sorry attorney Michael Nava was not elected to California Supreme Court office because he is clever, smart, and gay. Maybe next time..... ( Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from D. L. Berns -- Super book : Rated online as good condition, but was in excellent condition for a hardback. Thought it was a paperback but love that it was hardback! Completes my Nava collection. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brian Eckert -- Brilliant ! Must read for fans of quality murder mysteries. : Nava has done it again. Beginning with his first work, The Little Death, Michael Nava has given us complex, compelling stories. Henry Rios finds himeself being lied to on all sides as he is pulled into this dark tale about the way LaLa Land really works. My only regret is that Mr. Nava is not too likely to get a movie option on this great work; it paints an all too accurate picture of the sins of Hollywood and the media. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 1998 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from mdquear58 -- predictable is not a mystery : If you have read the other books in this series, you'll likely be disappointed. It obvious that Mr. Nava wants to close out the series. The story line in this book is just to neat and tidy - a sort of, and they lived happily ever after. The ending is obvious within the first few chapters. For me it was boring and completely unrealistic. It made me think less of Mr. Nava' s story telling skills. On reflection the first novel in the series is the best; all the following books follow a slow downward trajectory in terms of predictability and loss of reality. I think this series might be best if read in a random order or just read one or two books in the series. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from TRIMONTIUM -- MONTEZUMA'S REVENGE? : Another outstanding story by this writer. I am not going to spoil it by talking about the plot. It is complicated and brings in all sorts of issues about growing up or being Gay as part of the story. Must read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2016 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Ankh -- Not my most fave in the series : I've been thoroughly enjoying Rios series. This one had a lot of story and plotting angst, which wasn't my cup of tea. Still engrossing. The best emotional part of the book for me was his connections to Josh, either on his dreams, or his little sex rendezvous, and while visiting the grave. The other thing that bothered me with this book was the very uncharacteristic and incongruous mistakes Henry kept making. ***Spoiler alert*** sneaking in the murder victim's apartment with the very obvious chance to get arrested and implicated? Making a deal with the devil in the bathhouse?? **** ( Reviewed in Australia on September 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Peabody -- Unbedingt lesenswert! : Ich bin gerade fertig geworden mit der Serie um Henry Rios (außer Band 2, Goldenboy, der zur Zeit offensichtlich nicht erhältlich ist). ( Reviewed in Germany on December 20, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Keith in Canada -- Well written with likeable Hero - but a bit over-the-top at the End. : Well written with a flawed and likable Hero. Towards the end though, it became 1. a political statement and 2. an american over-the-top hollywood finish. Both of these diminished the book for me. The realistic part of the book I had enjoyed so much went hollywood. Too bad. Otherwise a good book. Just change the ending. ( Reviewed in Canada on June 10, 2008 )
